Many ALA members report feeling like they’re “always on,” managing crises, people, and expectations with little time to recharge. But here’s the thing: self-care is not optional, it’s essential.
For the Newcomers: Learning to Pace Yourself
When I first started in legal management, I thought being available 24/7 was the mark of dedication. I answered emails late at night, said yes to every request, and tried to prove my worth through sheer responsiveness. Within months, I was exhausted, anxious, and questioning whether I was cut out for the role.
What I learned (thankfully, not too late), is that sustainability matters more than speed. You don’t have to do it all, and you certainly don’t have to do it all alone.
For the Veterans: Reclaiming Your Energy
If you’ve been in this field for years, you’ve likely mastered the art of multitasking and crisis management. But even seasoned professionals can fall into the trap of overextension. You may be mentoring others, managing firm growth, and navigating personal responsibilities—all while trying to stay composed.
The challenge isn’t just managing tasks—it’s managing your energy. Ask yourself: What drains me? What restores me? Then build your schedule around those answers.
Practical Tips for All Stages
Set Boundaries That Stick
- New managers: Start early. Protect your time before habits form.
- Experienced managers: Revisit your boundaries. Are they still serving you?
- Find a mentor. ALA offers an Ambassador program as well as networking opportunities where you can connect with seasoned professionals who’ve been through it.
Delegate with Intention
- Reassess your workload. Just because you’ve always done it doesn’t mean you still should.
- Trust your team. Whether you’re training new staff or working with seasoned colleagues, delegation is a leadership skill, not a weakness. Empower your team.
Create Micro-Moments of Relief
- A five-minute walk, a quiet coffee break, or even a few deep breaths between meetings can reset your nervous system.
Connect with Your Community
- Join legal admin networks (like Association of Legal Administrators), attend webinars, or simply reach out to a peer. Shared experiences can be grounding and affirming.
Give Yourself Permission to Pause
- You’re not just a professional, you’re a person. Rest isn’t a reward for productivity; it’s a prerequisite for it.
One of our newest Cyber Chapter members, Jane West, finds that a 90-minute massage is one of her keys to self-care. She says “Those 90 minutes of relaxation really help clear my mind and get me refocused” – a reminder of how important it is to recharge!
Final Thought: Whether you’re new to legal management or have years under your belt, remember: your well-being is not a side note, it’s the foundation of your leadership. Take care of yourself. You’re not just holding the firm together—you’re holding you together. You deserve the same care and attention you give to everyone else.
